The North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group Meeting will be held April 12-14, 2022, virtually (WebEx). During these three days we will hear from a wide range of speakers on various topics associated with wide-area time-synchronized measurements.  Please refer to the draft agenda above for additional details.

NASPI Work Group Virtual Meeting and Vendor Show, October 5-7, 2021

The North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group Virtual Meeting and Vendor Show will be October 5-7, 2021. These three days will feature presentations from invited speakers and NASPI Partners who will share various aspects of synchrophasor systems, technology updates, data sharing challenges, real time simulation, data analysis, and exploration of high-speed measurements associated with inverter-based resources.

Our distinguished keynote speaker will be Dr. Renata Rubeša, Head of Support to the Power System Control at the Croatian Transmission System Operator Ltd. or HOPS. HOPS has almost 15 years of experience in synchrophasors, from PMU technology to WAMS applications and its use in the control room and they have used synchrophasor technology in major disturbances in the European interconnected system.  HOPS is an essential service provider and obliged to follow the European Union Directive on security of network and information systems giving them experience in cyber security issues, application of measures and incident reporting methods.

Other meeting highlights consists of updates from the NASPI task team, NERC SMWG, WECC JSIS, IEEE, and the EIDSN.

Each partner will have an opportunity to address the work group audience throughout the meeting based on the level of partnership procured. The North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group Virtual Meeting will be April 13-15, 2021. Please join us for three full days featuring technical sessions and presentations discussing
 
•    high-resolution sensors characterizing the transient behavior of inverter-based resources and other fast-acting phenomena,
•    using measurement to enhance the accuracy of inverter-base resource models,
•    statistical analysis and deep learning for extracting actional information for large datasets,
•    advanced distribution system applications.

In addition to our technical sessions we will also hear about bi-lateral utility interactions, recent success in implementing a PMU placement plan in the transmission planning process, DOE’s Big Data Analytics update, and presentations from NASPI’s partners. Our distinguished keynote will be Michael Pesin, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Advanced Grid Research and Development, U.S. Department of Energy.

The virtual poster sessions will follow at the conclusion of the main Work Group agenda on Tuesday and the NASPI reception will be at the conclusion of the Wednesday meeting. Please see the agenda above for details.

The North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group virtual meeting will be November 3-5, 2020, featuring technical sessions and presentations that showcase innovative applications of synchrophasor technology. Future Requirements for the Measurement of Frequency and ROCOF

Description:
In electrical power systems around the world, accurate and timely measurement of Frequency and ROCOF have been rapidly gaining importance. With increasing requirements for power system automation, and an increasing shift towards inverter-based resources, several organizations have been independently looking into the future performance requirements for frequency and ROCOF. This virtual panel of experts will focus on the future requirements for the accuracy of Frequency and ROCOF on the grid, in both transmission and distribution systems. Additionally, information to help understand the challenges in determining F and ROCOF measurements in a timely manner will also be presented.Panel will consist of:

  • Dr. Guglielmo Frigo of EPFL and Dr. Gert Reitveld, representing the EURAMET study on ROCOF requirements and work being done at EPFL and  METAS, the Swiss National Metrology Institute.
  • Dr. Gustavo Brunello of GE, representing IEC TC8 / TC96 JWG 12: which is drafting an IEC standard for Frequency and ROCOF measurement performance for various use cases in distribution systems.
  • Dr. Filipe Wilches-Bernal of Sandia National Labs, representing the DOE funded project on “Numerical Algorithms for Estimating Frequency to Enable Synthetic Inertia”. The results of which are helpful in understanding the challenges of frequency and ROCOF estimation.
