Recent BESS Oscillations: Root Cause Analysis and Wide-Area Impacts

This webinar presents an opportunity to examine both root cause analysis and wide-area impacts of recent oscillation events. Monitoring and mitigation of oscillations like these are important aspects of reliable power system operation. One of the most successful applications of synchrophasor networks is oscillation analysis, but as the generation resource mix changes, new dynamics are beginning to appear. Recently, oscillations from battery energy storage systems (BESSs) near solar generation facilities have been observed across the Western Interconnection. During this webinar, Matthew Rhodes from SRP will discuss the results of a root cause analysis to understand the local mechanisms that led to the oscillations. To complement this local perspective, Daniel Goodrich of BPA will describe how the oscillations were observed hundreds of miles away with BPA’s synchrophasor-based tools. The capabilities of these tools and opportunities for refinement will also be discussed.
