Let’s Talk About Synchrophasors, PMUs & Applications

Along with the increasing deployment of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in power system grids worldwide, various synchrophasor-based applications have been and continue to be developed, that target to enhance grid operations and planning, and are expected to contribute to the improvement of grid reliability, security and efficiency.

In this presentation, an overview of synchrophasor technology and PMUs will be provided, followed by representative state-of-the-art PMU applications and industry use cases that are based on vendor and/or research grade software tools. In addition, given the transformations that the power systems industry is experiencing nowadays, especially with the massive integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs), a list of trending PMU applications and associated R&D efforts will be also discussed. Finally, limitations of PMUs for use in monitoring and control applications, especially in systems with high-levels of IBRs, will be presented, paving the way for the need of synchronized Point-on-Wave (POW) measurement data.
